Apple makes money off of iTunes - they won't tell us how much, but it is a money maker (all be it insignificant compared to the iPod)
I think that you mean Apple makes money off of iTMS (iTunes Music Store). And yes, it would be interesting to know how much they really make.

This isn't the content of music on iTunes isn't DRM protected, furthermore I still own the content (even the DRM) as I can do exactly what I want with it. I can back it up, move it between devices, and have absolutely no dependence on sustainable bandwidth, company's servers, and policy changes revolving around the use of the server.
As for your netflix comment, there have been plenty of times that Netflix has removed content from their servers that was previously available, if I actually own the content I don't even have to worry about the company removing availability of item <x>.
Streaming content is inferior to downloaded content, it depends on a reliable connection, it depends on your bandwidth not being capped or being regulated to a lower setting because you went over (it'd be pretty easy to stream videos and go over your limit especially in HD).
With the recent iPhone privacy fiasco, APPLE would be the LAST company on earth that I would want to depend on.
As a backup option I think its great, as a primary service that eliminates the concept of downloading and owning your content, its complete bull. I'm not paying money for content that essentially stays in someone else's computer that they could do what they want with it at ANY time. Forget it.
speed, quality and reliability through internet connections is absolutely INFERIOR than when it is run from a hard drive (avg transfer for a hard drive in 2007 was 1030 MBits (128MB/sec) or flash memory (even the lowest class runs at 2MB/sec, which is more than most people can get in their internet connection).
If it goes further to where computers start using cloud services just to run and store their computer it becomes a) a privacy issue, b) a security issue. People like their privacy and like to own stuff they pay for.
who is to say you can't do the same with the cloud service? why can't you download ur music from the cloud to your computer?
Why is it now OK to be a backup service? they are still going to have your data....why does it matter if it's your primary version or a backup?
There is a reason why this has come about. if it was so stupid it wouldn't be happening. People can be really weird about "owning" things. I have friends who collect thousands of dvds. wow, to view 1-2 times. what a waste.
I guess the music and documents i have in idisk i don't own either right?
I was referring to netflix bc the content one may like is there. maybe not all of it, but with the apple option on the cloud you'd have that option to load what you want to listen to.....aka you would choose the playlist.
If netflix had that option for movies. Why would you spend thousands of dollars buying dvds when you can have it at a subscription price in the cloud?

What about 1080p support when the iMac is used as a monitor? I use a Kanex XD to watch Blu-ray movies on my 2009 iMac but it is limited to 720p. "This is due to limitation of the iMac 27" as a display which accepts only 1280x720(720p) or 2560x960 resolution base on the display EDID," the product's official site explains. "If and when the iMac 27" accepts a 1920x1080(1080p) resolution the Kanex XD will be able to output at 1080p."

I know the bills add up quickly, but just how much does an active case cost? That's a lot of zeroes!
Not that much. Not 100 million smackers. Some seem to believe that patent and copyright lawsuits are slot machines that always pay off. Not so. You settle for big numbers when you think you're likely to lose. You fight when believe the case will be dismissed. Apple easily could have slugged this one out with Creative, and they would have, or settled for a token amount, if they thought they had a chance of prevailing. The result speaks for itself.

This is hardly a rumour, more just pointing out the obvious. What I want is
Likely:
SB i5 quad processor in the 21
 Thunderbolt
GPU upgrade (although I would like something at least as powerful as 5770)
Unlikely
 2 HDs standard, 1 x 64GB SSD, 1 x 1TB HD availabe for 21"
 2560 x 1440 resolution available for 21
 Blu-ray
Think the design will be the same, this time around. Re-design next time with Lion pre-installed and maybe, just maybe a touch screen

Wasn't there supposedly a "virus" going around for the Mac on Facebook a couple months ago? And it was supposed to be all doom and gloom for the Mac (so I've read in the forums from doom-sayers)......but, I haven't heard anything about it since, because nothing happened......this is pretty much the same thing.

To those bitching a few threads back about no jobs - well, at least the lawyers and linguists get a job.
This is a bigger deal than people realize: somebody EMPLOYED a linguist! Unfortunately, he has a Ph.D. in English (linguistics concentration), not linguistics itself, so I'm not really sure it counts.
I have to say, I kind of agree with Microsoft on this, much as I like Apple, but I'm interested to see how this plays out.

I'll probably come of sounding like a jerk and opening a HUGE can of worms with this, BUT...
I'm glad somebody else was thinking what I was thinking! Why do we constantly have to place a line between men and women, black and white, American and everyone else. If we actually want equality and unity and all those wonderful things, I think it's about time we stop dilineating between groups of people.
It can't be both ways... if women/minorities want equality in the work place, or government, or in society as a whole, there can't also be inequality in the world when it comes to things like this... men and women, black and white, straight and gay - they have to be equal across the board, or not at all. We can't have it both ways.
That said, bravo to Apple, U2, and anyone else involved here. Anytime you can use your power and influence to raise funds and awareness - no matter the alterior motives - it's a good thing.
Exactly, why just limit this to people with AIDS. That discriminates against people who are healthy.

Exactly. The sad thing is that people pay them to predict something 4 years out like this. In a vibrant market like this, there is no way predictions 4 years out will be right. Maybe 1 year could be close.
I shall come back to this prediction 4 years from now, and laugh at how dumb the prediction is.

Although the semi-official word out of Apple Americas is that invitations to the event have "not been sent" out, a seemingly inadvertent leak out of Apple Europe last week pinned the affair for Tuesday, September 12. It will be hosted by Jobs in a yet-to-be disclosed California location and beamed via satellite throughout the world.
Jobs will have much to talk about during the event, sources familiar with the chief executive's plans have said, including new iMacs and a much-anticipated update to the iPod nano. But the real push, they say, will be tied to the big screen.

The police should not be able to detain you without probable cause. PERIOD. If you are doing nothing wrong the cops should not stop you, EVER.

Probably at the same time as the Merom MBP.
I bought one, just to test. Wasn't bad, would buy more if they add a title I want.
Hmm... your actions are supporting my thoughts... how many of those 125,000 downloads were simply to try it out - probably a lot of them. I'm more interested to see how many downloads have been sold after the first 90 days.

Windows 7 kicks ass, it's every bit as good as Snow Leopard if not better.
I especially like the x11 server integration that windows 7 has.... oh wait...
let's not get into blanket-statement flame wars here. For _some_ people W7 is great, for others, not so much. those of us that use the unix/x11 component of SnowLeopord really love it and miss it on W7.

Nice! Still doesn't answer the mystery of the clickwheel color though
My guess is that it is white since the logo and top is white. And the color does look more primary red than the deep red artist rendition.

Please, please, please, do not switch to Cingular just for this phone! They are known for having the worst customer service in the USA. It was a nightmare being with them (5 calls a month to Cingular customer service, at ~45 minutes each, to correct their billing mistakes). I switched to T-Mobile, and they are FAR better. Their customer service is a excellent.
I find it incredible that they even make mistakes on their bills. These days with completely automated ERP software those mistakes should be virtually inexistant.

The very fact that people think they "deserve" vacation days is mind-boggling. Why should you "Deserve" to get paid a single dime you did not earn?
I work about 60% self-employed free lance, and 40% at my old "day job". Guess what. Neither one offers me "vacation days". Am I miserable? Hardly!
If I want a vacation day, I simply do not work. That also means I do not get paid. It would seem mighty pretentious of me to be expect pay for work not done.
If you want a job with more vacation days, FIND ONE! no one owes you a darn thing, certainly not pay for days off.

No they don't,. Apple is just 4% of their sales. Apple, on the other hand, can hardly release any hardware (with exception of battery chargers, perhaps) without Samsung components.
ummmm, yes they do.
Apple is a major customer of Samsungs since the Korean company supplies various parts for Apples devices. Now it has been reported that Apple is gearing up to spend a juicy $7.8 billion on components from Samsung, making the Cupertino-based company Samsungs single largest customer this year.
There are plenty of other links (http://www.gadgetsgeek.ly/2011/02/15/apple-to-purchase-7-8-billion-in-parts-from-samsung/) as well supporting Apple's importance to Samsung as their largest customer.

Seems like the application developers could add a link to such a feature in their code so the user could just assign core volume in each application prefs that would tell the system what amount to assign to that process. Maybe even have the system do that automatically to all applicaiton preferences so the choice appears in all general preference panes of each application.I don't know if it's up to Apple or the program developers to allow CPU/core assignment.
