Just to further clarify -- NIH syndrome is when a company chooses not to use technologies invented by other companies in its own products. They prefer to design and build the entire package themselves, in-house.

I'm not that interested in an iPhone. Apple would need to add some very unique features for me to consider buying one. What if it supported NuBus cards?

OK, that was a (bad) joke, since I think NuBus was one of those Apple-only inventions from the past.

But why would you NOT want Apple's phone, szark? Is is that you don't want a camera phone or music phone in the first place, or that you expect it to be priced too high? Without knowing more about it, how do we know it's not going to be at least as good as the phones we have now? Plus an Apple logo.

Surely Conroe needs to go somewhere in Apple's lineup? Great value, fast and soon to be quad-core.

ya, there really appears to be no space for the Conroe chip in Apple's lineup... at least with the decisions they've made so far in updating the iMac to Merom.

Who cares what color an iPod is. Shouldn't really matter. Color does not affect funtionality. What matters is what is on the inside.

I have no problem with Greenpeace being at the show as long as they back up their findings with facts and conduct themselves in a civil manner. If Microsoft stepped out of line at the show, I would expect them to be kicked out of the show as well.

agreed. Apple should work hard to be a environmentally safe company, but that should stand for all companies too. i don't see why any one single company should be singled out at this point.

It's illegal. Police need to publicly announce check points before setting up. Ironic they would want to pull the app since this is the basis that makes them legal in the first place.

I'm not sure that's the case in Texas, but I will acquiesce since I don't remember that from school and also am typing on my iPhone. Either way, the app is still a good one, and shouldn't be removed.

Several news outlets are confirming (http://www.macworld.com/news/2006/09/05/showtime/index.php) the media event that Apple is holding on September 12th 2006.

More details of the event were released to day when Apple sent out invitations to select media members. The invites says "It's Showtime":

    http://guides.macrumors.com/images/1/18/Apple_showtime.jpg

First word of the event leaked out (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/08/20060831122800.shtml) on August 31st, with multiple reports of a media event to be held in San Francisco. Today, the digital invitations were sent out confirming the event and setting a time and place.

The announcements will take place at 10:00am Pacific time at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in downtown San Francisco. Based on the title of the invitation, it appears likely that the long rumored Movie Store will finally be released.

Businessweek recently provided (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/08/20060831122800.shtml) some early details of the service, which they claim to offer movies from $9.99-$14.99. Meanwhile, Appleinsider feels (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060904194920.shtml) a new video streaming device will also be introduced. Meanwhile, Core 2 Duo iMacs (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060901123538.shtml) and new iPods (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060904073025.shtml) are also expected.

If you have access to this media event, please contact us (mailto:webmaster@macrumors.com?Subject=Showtime Event).

I use both.... and all I can say is "CUT and paste". Windows has had it for years, OS X SL doesn't. Same with window snap.

Huh? Command C and Command V to cut and paste? You can also highlight the text and right click.

    Command Shift 4= snap selection
    Command Shirt 3= full screen.

A super cool video camera. Please, Please, how are we supposed to get our stuff on youtube or movietube. You could make video with an apple videocamera, edit on a mac then upload to Apple movietube and then sell your movie/short for $2.99 and Apple would get $1.99 profit and I would get 99 cents for the millions that buy it WEEEEEHOOOOOO.

    Welcome MovieTube & Quicktake HD

Clock speeds will hit 4GHz and keep rising, but not at the rate we have been accustomed to.
I'm not so sure that 4GHz is a given. Doesn't that pesky speed of light put a practical cap on clock frequency? At 4GHz a signal doesn't have time to cross the chip in one clock, so is there any point to such high frequencies?

If it destroys their whole business model, then it is not dumb to not "try it out".

Apple is clearly not interested in the subscription or rental business models.

    edit: Clarity
How does it destroy 'their whole business model'? I just think there has to be differentiation between movies and songs. Wheras I have no interest whatsoever (and never will) in renting songs (read: subscription model), I do have an interest in renting movies. I can listen to the same song 10 times over in one day. Can I do the same with a movie? Yes. Will I? No.

I can count the number of movies I've watched more than twice on both my hands. So can a lot of people out there. If you're really interested in being a collector and keeping the movie, downloading it off iTMS is a dumb idea.

So is it dumb for Apple to ignore a market of people such as myself? Yes. Does it destroy their business model to offer movie rentals (NOT TV shows or music)? You explain that to me

Apple noted (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/03/01/apple-defends-against-microsoft-in-app-store-trademark-dispute/) in a prior filing that it had moved to protect its trademark by reaching out to companies it believed was using the "App Store" name improperly, but Microsoft argues that the simple fact that those companies were using the term in the first place indicates that the term is generic.

WOW! That's quite the argument Microsoft's putting forward. If that's true, they're arguing against the entire trademark system! Using someone else's trademark causes it to be generic and no longer a trademark?

    Good luck with that one.

Stock owners in these companies. Which are made up of middle class citizens

The bottom 80% of the U.S. population own 8.9% of stocks, that means those who you refer to as middle class own around 7% (incidentally because of the bizarre use of the social term middle class in the U.S. it hides the obvious fact the entire 80% are actually economically best described as workers).

Yeah, I am in the same boat.
For me Cingular is the worst because I can't get it to work at my home and work. I have Verizon, is OK. but at least work. The truth is every carrier has a problem. I am still waiting to find somebody that says their carrier is 100% great and they are satisfied.
I hope iphone will work on other carriers. If not I'll wait until it comes with Verizon or any other carrier other than Cingular.
What good is to have an amazing phone if you can talk or get coverage?

Hey I'm satisfied with my carrier. I think the last time I had any problems with coverage was back in the 20th century. I've got coverage even in the freaking underground. I'd have coverage in the middle of wilderness if I chose to go there. It's cheap as well, I never pay incoming calls, my phone has never been locked and it works pretty much all over the world, my operator has had packet data connection most of this century as well and 3g for several years. What more could I wish?

The idea must delight at&t. Data charges will be very high

What about those many places where 3G is not available
    ....weak reception areas
    ....no reception areas
    ....airplanes, subways,...

Curious that everyone is clamoring for a thunderbolt-enabled machine, but there isn't a single thunderbolt drive available on the market.

I guess some people just need to feel like they have new stuff even if it's totally pointless.

Everybody said that to Nikola Tesla when he introduced the AC... It's new, and we have to redesign everything now, and Edison is gonna lose all his investments oh my god! We can't do that!

    A century later...

I think you are seriously underestimating how expensive these type of patent battles can be. Check out the following story:

    http://www.internetnews.com/bus-news/article.php/3402321

So SCO obviously expected its legal costs to spiral beyond $31 million to make a special deal with its law firm to cap costs. The fact they are willing to give as much as 33% of any potential winnings with the legal firm indicates that the final tally could easily approach $100 million if not for the cap.

It is quite clear that Apple would have made life very, very expensive and excruciating for Creative's legal team. $100 million in legal costs is not unrealistic considering that you not only had the original suit, but countersuits by Apple involving 4 bonafide patents.

What would creative legal cost have been. I seriously doubt apple legal cost would have approached 100 million but for the sake of argument, lets say it did, would creative cost also have approached 100 million. Could creative have paid that much?. If apple legal cost could escalate to that amount, creative would have dropped the case long before the cost approached that amount. Creative does not have 100 mil to blow on lawyers. Either way you look at it, apple legal cost would not have approached 100 mil. The point of the settlement was not to avoid legal cost (as many of you fondly point out, apple has 10 billion in cash, why should legal cost even worry them?). No, the problem was that creative might have won. Then apple would have had a problem.

I see Apple stock going up on this news. $100 Million is getting off easy. Could have been a LOT worse.

These guys knew there was going to be a component of danger in their heist. Hence, they brought loaded guns with them. If they did want to run the risk of being shot and killed, they should've stayed home in bed.

It just amazes me how many idiots are on this board crying foul because a person in law enforcement killed a criminal who was trying to not only rob a store, but also trying to kill him.
